Narrative Text:
The plaque describes the involvement of local men from the Shankill area during World War I (1914–1918). It states:
"During the Great War 1914–1918 ordinary working men took up arms to serve King and Country and come to the aid of the Empire in its hour of need."
Thousands of Shankill men marched to war, with over 1,500 never returning. On the first day of the Battle of the Somme (July 1, 1916), over 150 of them lost their lives.
The plaque emphasizes the importance of remembering their bravery and sacrifice.
