Hill Street Swordfight

This mural depicts a dramatic sword fight between two men in what appears to be an eighteenth-century interior. The scene is painted almost entirely in black, white and grey, giving it the appearance of an old photograph, film still or theatrical illustration.

At the centre, two men confront one another with swords. The figure on the left is dressed in a light-coloured period coat, knee breeches, stockings and buckled shoes. He raises one arm above his head while holding his sword forward. The man on the right wears darker clothing and leans into the duel, extending his sword towards his opponent.

Behind them, another man sits watching from beside a small table. On the table is a candelabrum with several candles, helping establish the period setting. A prone figure lies on the floor between and behind the two fighters, suggesting that the confrontation has already resulted in violence or injury.

The mural is painted across the entire gable wall of the building. Its monochrome palette, dripping paint effects and rough lower edge give the work a deliberately aged and atmospheric appearance.

Overall, the mural presents a tense historical duel or sword-fighting scene, with strong theatrical staging and period costume. It is markedly different in subject matter from Belfast’s political murals, instead drawing on historical or dramatic imagery.
