BALLYMACARRETT SOMME SOCIETY
"Remembering those fathers, sons, husbands & brothers who made
the supreme sacrifice 100 years on"
The mural includes:
A central depiction of the Ulster Tower, a memorial commemorating the 36th (Ulster) Division.
Images of soldiers, poppies, and a recruitment poster reading, "Your King and Country Need You: Enlist Now."
Surrounding the mural are rows of painted poppies symbolizing remembrance.
At the bottom is the quote:
"I am not an Ulsterman but yesterday, the 1st July, as I followed their amazing attack, I felt
that I would rather be an Ulsterman than anything else in the world. My pen cannot describe
adequately the hundreds of heroic acts that I witnessed… The Ulster Volunteer Force,
from which the division was made, has won a name which equals any in history."
Captain Wilfred Spender, 36th (Ulster) Division’s HQ Staff
